Four adult koalas and one younger koala were released in Kanangra-Boyd National Park, in New South Wales. They are the first of 12 koalas rescued from the Blue Mountains to return “home”, after being housed in January by the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

When Owen discovered that the fire was killing the animals, he drew a kangaroo, a koala and a dingo in the rain, and told his mother that his greatest wish was for the fires in Australia to end.

“We still don’t know what caused the fall. We simply lost contact with the device”, explained Shane Fitzsimmons, head of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) in New South Wales.

Fitzsimmons said the three dead were US citizens who were part of the state’s fire-fighting component. “The firefighters’ fraternity is like a family, a small family, and the crew were well known, not just here in Australia”, he said.

Officials in the states of New South Wales and Victoria, in the south-east of the country, have warned that today will be marked by severe storms, hail and possible floods and winds.

Heavy rains fell in the East Gippsland region, one of the areas most affected by the fires in Victoria, and rains also hit the south coast and the Snowy Mountains, which have been devastated by flames since New Year’s Eve.

The young Australian risked his life to save koalas from the fires that are plaguing the country.

Patrick decided to enter an unsafe area in Mallacoota Forest, Victoria, to rescue the animals.
“I found eight or nine by the time they were rescued. I found more than 10 who were dead and another five who were alive and healthy”, he told local media.
