Coronavirus has killed 80 people in China

Previous balance pointed to 56 dead.

The death toll from the new coronavirus detected in China has now increased to 80, after 24 new deaths were recorded in Hubei province, the epicenter of the contagion, local authorities announced. In this region, 371 new patients infected with the coronavirus (provisionally named 2019-nCoV) were detected, bringing the number of confirmed cases to more than 2300 across China, according to data from the central government.

The new coronavirus was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan (center) in late 2019 and the previous balance pointed to 56 dead in China. The majority of the infected people are found in mainland China, but there are also confirmed cases in Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, United States, Singapore, Vietnam, Nepal, Malaysia, France, Australia and Canada.

In Portugal, the infection of a man who was suspicious and who was hospitalized on Saturday  25th in Lisbon after returning from Wuhan has not been confirmed.

Chinese Health Minister Ma Xiaowei warned on Sunday that those infected could transmit the disease during the incubation period, which takes between one day and two weeks. During that period, those infected do not show symptoms, which nullifies the effect of screening measures, such as temperature measurements at airports or train stations. Symptoms include fever, pain, malaise and breathing difficulties.
